London Elektricity – Yikes!

London Elektricity is a name in drum & bass who doesn’t really need an introduction.
The stunning ‘Elektricity Will Keep Me Warm’ (read more here) starts London Elektricity‘s long anticipated album ‘Yikes!‘ and leaves us sweetly mesmerised by Elsa Esmeralda‘s beautiful vocals which also bring a next level magic into ‘Meteorites‘, the second track of the album. Goosebumps run down the spine while listening to the very 90s synth sounds and the epic piano makes this a genuine ‘put a smile on your face’ piece of liquid drum & bass.

Had A Little Fight‘ also features beautiful piano and perhaps a bit more melancholic mood. It feels like this tune could trigger a different mood in the listener, depending on the state of mind they’re in when this is on. ‘A Plan That Cannot Fail‘ is a definite floor filler. The build up can lead to nothing else but a hands-in-the-air collective euphoria achieved by only the most skilled sound smiths around (London Elektricity being among them without a doubt). London Elektricity himself says that ‘Yikes!‘ is a straightforward dancefloor tune too, I can see why and that’s not because of the class A references in lyrics. I think ‘Yikes! is beautifully atmospheric and moody at the same time, playing tricks on the mood and feel as well as the depth of sound. A track I would very happily listen performed by a symphonic orchestra.

Fault Lines‘ brings down the tempo and the soulful and soft Elsa Esmeralda strokes the ear. Reminds me of something near Funki Porcini, which triggers emotions nothing short of bliss. I don’t want to say it surprises me that London Elektricity produces music that is on a completely different level of competence from anything else in the scene right now… but I’m very impressed and pleased by the actual musical complexity of this album.

U Gotta B Crazy‘ is a bit crazy indeed. It would classify as ‘drumstep’ but that term makes me cringe. Bass heavy, crazy fx, a definite very early rave sound here and there.. but I personally don’t feel it in drumstep. I can hear the appeal in this tune to those who do. It’s obviously a good thing to cater for all preferences. ’Round The World In A Day‘ is seriously funky and definitely not from this decade. Mental image of a red convertible, summer of love and inexcusable lightness of life and sunshine on your skin. Just close your eyes and tell me what you see? ‘Love The Silence‘ is bassy and atmospheric, the satin vocals carry this tune on feathers… It’s deep and it seems to resonate in the area of my brain that induces a certain emotional response. May or may not have shed a sly tear. Shh! The fast paced ‘Flesh Music‘ brings back depth of bass last flaunted by LTJ Bukem and other guys on Goodlooking. Oldschool jungle is definitely among my favourite dnb sounds – simple yet ingenious melody progressing into a deep clean bass, fast broken beats and the occasional bit of vox adding to the slightly jazzy spatial awareness.

If the closing track ‘Invisible Worlds‘ doesn’t give you goosebumps and watery eyes, then I don’t know what will. One of the most pleasant surprises in drum & bass for me recently was to learn that London Elektricity himself has found inspiration from one of my favourite composers (and his), Arvo Pärt. I can clearly hear the homage to the minimal sounds of Pärt’s (if you have no idea who my fellow Estonian Arvo Pärt is, go on YouTube now and the first thing you should listen is ‘Spiegel Im Spiegel’), building again into something that I would very happily let me blow away in a live performance. What an epic, epic end to an epic album!

The use of natural instruments, Elsa Esmeralda and the general level of this album is a combination of all sorts of awesome. London Elektricity has played on all the right notes of my soul and left me choked up. I’m moved on all levels of my love for music, and this is the me talking who spent the first 17 years of her life submerged in [classical] music [training]. This album isn’t just some good quality dance music production, it’s music at its best in all aspects of it.

I’m clearly rambling and I wish I could say more, but words limit the emotions whereas music doesn’t.

Released 25/04/11 on Hospital Records.

Quiet before the storm ft DJ Shadow

In a month I shall be liberated. Until then I’m staying relatively quiet on the blogging end – have to put most of my words into the dissertation I’m writing. I do have a couple of things in store, including some big stuff from Hospital Records … Suppose you’ll have to watch this space ;)

Meanwhile, mood music. Perfect for academic music DJ Shadow himself. BBC Radio 1′s Essential Mix. Appreciate it!

Spectrasoul – Lost Disciple/Reminiscence

Just when you think Spectrasoul are at the very top of their creativity, they smack you in the face with a new release that is even better. And they keep on doing it all the time! Their fresh touch on every new tune they put out is incredible. They keep the very quintessential Spectrasoul-feel in, while delivering something completely new.

Now, ‘Lost Disciple’, especially when you watch the ultra cool video at the same time… I don’t almost know what to say! It’s haunting, gorgeous, new. The video works so well (make sure you watch it in HD full screen – guaranteed to blow your mind), makes me feel like the music is trying to reach out [to me?], trying to make us appreciate again how beautiful life around us is and that we shouldn’t hurt it.. I’m rambling now, but this is truly stunning. Just listen-watch yourself, it’s probably one of the best drum & bass music videos out there.

The neighbouring track ‘Reminisecnce’ is dancier and darker, yet it carries a similar epic vibe in it. Beautiful. No doubt Spectrasoul will always deliver. Preorder ‘Lost Disciple/Reminiscence’ from Shogun Audio shop , because I don’t think it’s a release anyone should live without.

London Elektricity – Elektricity Will Keep Me Warm/The Plan That Cannot Fail

It’s taken a good few years and it seems it was all worth the wait. London Elektricity‘s new single is out today on Hospital Records.

Teamed up with the beautiful Elsa Esmeralda, whose soft and slightly husky voice is familiar from possibly one of the biggest drum & bass anthems of all time, ‘Just One Second’. With a bit of a melancholic undertone, this stunning track is what we have missed from the drum & bass scene for the two years London Elektricity hasn’t released anything. Less is more, the tune is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine, being quite simple, yet so complete at the same time. London Elektricity is one of the biggest names in the scene for a reason and this is a proof and a half. Mesmerising!
But hold tight, the flip, ‘The Plan That Cannot Fail’ is equally big! The beautiful piano progresses this epic into an absolutely essential tune for the dance floors. The uplifting mood and ‘hands up in the air’ feel are bound to make you feel like everything is well in the world. Just close your eyes, let the music take you, with a smile on your face welcome back the legend that is London Elektricity!

This is from London Elektricity’s forthcoming album ‘Yikes‘ and if I’m completely honest, I’m finding it hard to contain myself in the anticipation.

Nixus ‘Rapture/Wraith’

I’ve been waiting for something like this to be released for a while! Ridiculously euphoric and uplifting, can’t help myself with tapping the foot and having the simple yet ingenious melody stuck in my head the whole day. More more more, I demand!

First release of Regal Records, the b-side of this is the dark and twisted step-brother, dirtier but still so dancy. Guaranteed to shred some dancefloors.

Hats off and hands up in the air to Sebastian Weingartshofer (Skankandbass YouTube channel) and Robert Etheridge. This release is heavy and a half.

Nu:Tone ‘Words And Pictures’

It’s hard to take a new album by Nu:Tone and not be shaking with excitement or thinking that you’re in for a massive aural treat. So, I had to contain myself when I saw ‘Words And Pictures’ in my mail.

First of all, I think it is absolutely essential to mention that his website looks sick. Such a cool way of presenting album + cover art. Very innovative, 10 points for that! (You’ll also find links for purchasing the album there & can play around with the cool design while listening to the tracks)

1. Shine In (feat Natalie Williams). It would be harder to find a tune that’s more of a genuine feel-good euphoric than this opening track. Natalie Williams aces the vocals and we would expect no less from here. It’s catchy without going cheesy, which could be a slippery slope, but this is done with class.

2. Coming Back (feat Heidi Vogel). The first vibes continue to to ‘Coming Back’ as well. With a bit of added atmosphere, stunning vocals, a bassline going a bit dirtier and darker, but still beautifully liquid.

3. The Feeling (feat Ben Westbeech). As a woman, these vocals just make the insides melt, trying not to be so completely charmed by this, but resistance is futile. It’s got a pinch of Nu:Tone’s older production vibe in it, adding a nostalgic note to it, ahhhh…

4. The First Time Ever (feat Natalie Williams). The intro fools you easily into expecting a nice and mellow tune, but oh no, Williams’ gorgeous vocals guide us to a new flavour of bass and sharp hi-hats from Nu:Tone.

5. Piece of You (feat Stac). A very brave style on a drum and bass producer’s album. It’s almost sensual vibe delivered in a downtempo interpretation of broken beats, with some soul just proves that Dan is not just a drum and bass mastermind.

6. Broken (feat Kyan). I will try to hold myself back to a socially acceptable level of praise with this one. Irrevocably the favourite track of the whole album. Goosebumps, shivers down my spine, the haunting vocals and simplicity of the melody and the drums. It’s been a while since someone made a drum and bass tune this melodic, gorgeous and non-cheesy. It’s been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it, and I think I fall for it more and more each time I listen to it. Everything just works. Oh wow..

7. Win The Fight (feat Lisa Milett). Something a bit more ‘standard Hospital Records’ – but it’s fair enough because Nu:Tone is definitely one of the guys to blame for the Hospital sound. Once it drops, the vocals dominate and carry the happy-go-lucky tune along, through video game sounds.

8. Set Me Free. A very elevated spatial awareness is predominant in this mellow, slightly more melancholic tune. Nice balance and a very successful venture outside what would be perceived as Nu:Tone’s comfort zone in drum and bass.

9. One (feat Sophie Paul). Definitely a match to the other tracks with female vocals on this album. Can’t help the summery vibes it brings.

10. Do You Like It (feat Natalie Williams). A very welcome trip to the jungle and old school vibes, again lead by Natalie Williams on her trademark vocals.

11. The Love Has Gone (feat Kyan). Nineties’ feel in the intro, we hear another metamorphosis of Nu:Tone’s style. Kyan’s vocals would thaw any heart while the tune itself is a very warmly welcomed alternative on a mostly drum and bass dominated album.

12. Invisible (feat 4Hero & Natalie Williams). Summery, warm, familiar. Gets the foot bouncing and puts a smile on your face.

13. Wild Life (Nu:Tone remix). Definite retro influences, this is a definite Hospitality floor igniter.

The album as a whole is so very quintessentially Nu:Tone while everything is kept fresh and new genres are brought in. The impressive collaborations make this album stand out high above most stuff coming out all across the drum and bass scene right now.

I listen

Hey all. While I’m gathering momentum to decide what the honorary first proper blog post will be, it’s probably a good idea to explain what all of this will be.

I listen to a lot of music, both at my free time and also because of the work I do. I also review some of that music every now and then. I’ve noticed that writing about music is something that I quite enjoy doing and it seems I even make some sense.

So, I’m going to start posting my music reviews here, also writing them just for this blog. I will not limit myself to any genres, because it is narrow minded and would definitely limit my options. I suspect a lot of it will be dance music because I’m quite immersed in it, but other genres should keep it diverse.

Watch this space!

Love,
Ave
